Close your eyes; feel the light breeze wisp around your body. Listen. Beneath the honking, tire-screeching, and hustle and bustle of the city, let the music engulf you as you walk down the street.
Eric Kufs is crooning out “Lean on Me” like he is on American Idol. After the last few notes on his guitar fade away, he leans toward the microphone.
“Tips and donations are appreciated, and a CD is five dollars,” Kufs says.
After adjusting in his stool to find a more comfortable spot, he starts his next song. He plays as if he is performing for a giant crowd, but his venue is Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade.
The Promenade is known for its shops, friendliness, and talented street performers whose acts compliment the sunny environment of Santa Monica.
“Third Street originally was a street where cars went down,” Santa Monica Visitor Center employee Jacquelyn Witherspoon said. “Then, it became pedestrian, and then they added the shops. Through the years, there has been a variety of performers.”
Some performers on The Promenade hope to make it big. One performer, Robert Muraine, got his wish. After three years as a street performer, Muraine auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance and made it to the next round in Las Vegas. He quit before advancing further in the competition. His popularity on the show, however, landed him many gigs even after he was no longer a contestant.
Singer Chelsea Williams also hopes to gain success on The Promenade (which musicians also called Third Street).
“Music is definitely something I want to make a career out of,” said Williams, who has been performing on Third Street for five years.
Third Street is not only rewarding for the entertainers, but also for the listeners. Local Calfornia State University Northridge student Corie Cox said the sounds add to the atmosphere.
“Third Street brings together a mix of people,” Cox said. “Californians are more open to street performers, and you can see everything from jugglers to musicians.”
European exchange student and Nail Art employee Alyona Dueovskaye said the music is soothing. She adds, however, that it is sometimes too loud and prevents her from clearly hearing customers’ requests.
“But you get used to it,” Dueovskaye said. One tourist noted that “the majority of people on Third Street have a lot of talent — or a lot of nerve.”
Next time you are walking down the great melting pot of all talents, listen for the voice of Kufs rising above the sounds of the jazz piano player and the human beat-boxer half a block away, belting his heart out. In their minds, they are on center stage — though not yet in front of a huge crowd — but on the path to their dreams of success, fame, and doing something they love.
