Each J Camper’s schedule is like any professional journalist’s–every nook and cranny filled with essential experiences to help them get the story. J Campers rise early, meet the luminaries in the industry, build the stories they are assigned to, then go to sleep with their stomachs and minds full. Oh. And have tons of fun while they’re doing it.

Some of this week’s highlights:

1. Covering LA: Los Angeles is filled with movie stars, television actors, recording artists, paparazzi — and all their round-the-clock drama. People Magazine assistant editor Cynthia Wang and Associated Press entertainment reporter Derrik Lang tell you how they cover the best beat in town.
2. Get the Picture: Hear from award-winning photojournalist Barbara Davidson of the Los Angeles Times shares her inspiring work.
3. In the name of the Law: Just what rights do student journalists have and how do you use them when facing censorship? Prof. Mark Goodman of Kent State University provides some valuable legal advice.
4. You’ve Got the Look: On paper or online, your school newspapers, magazines, and yearbooks have to look good to stand out. Paul Cheung, interactive and graphics editor at the Associated Press, shows you the latest design techniques.
5. Broadcast Night: Some of LA’s top broadcast journalists – Brooke Anderson and Thelma Gutierrez of CNN and freelance ABC News foreign news producer Jeff MacIntyre – show off their favorite pieces.
6. Telling the Tale: Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez shares the secrets of how he chronicles life in the city.
7. What’s the Story? Washington Post reporter J. Freedom du Lac teaches you how to find great stories anywhere
8. Reaching Out: Foster care advocate, author, and actress Victoria Rowell, star of The Young and the Restless, talks about on her life in the foster care system and how she overcame major obstacles to pursue her dreams. Rowell is the national spokesperson for Casey Family Services, the direct service agency of J Camp’s longtime sponsor, the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
9. A Public Mission: Documentarian Ken Burns and PBS Newshour correspondent Hari Sreenivasan share insights about their work and the world of public broadcasting.
10. A Vision of Your Future: In this special panel to celebrate J Camp’s 10th anniversary, young journalists who started out as JCampers share the stories of their success.
