Derrik Lang, entertainment reporter for the Associated Press, has flown on P. Diddy’s jet, dined with stars from the Housewives TV series, and been one of a select few to test drive Nintendo’s newest video game system.
But when the term “celebrity reporting” comes to mind, many imagine being on a first-name basis with stars like Angelina Jolie and Paris Hilton and enjoying endless perks without real “hard” work involved. Lang insists this is definitely not the case.
Although he said that he was “already jaded” to stars from living in New York City, Lang said most reporters in this field are consummate professionals when meeting and interviewing these celebrities.
“It is more of hindsight [appreciation]” he said as he recalled his experience sitting in the audience observing Meryl Streep and Monique as Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin hosted the 2010 Academy Awards.
Lang and Cynthia Wang, a senior editor at People, both revealed their personal perspectives on reporting in the entertainment industry.
They revealed the many restrictions with celebrity publicists who requested counter-stories to other publications. Lang agreed with Wang as she discussed how publicists insist on taking as much control over an article as they possibly can through limiting quotations, questions, and photos. With that in mind, Lang stated that an honest and genuine conversation with whoever the interviewee may be is the best interview he could ask for.
Although his work in the entertainment field is full of unimaginable perks, there is a lot of serious work that can be drawn from the experiences. When Lang passed the infamous qualification course from ABC’s Wipeout, he mentions how actually experiencing the course can give him a new perspective of how to write the article. This was not only applied to writing articles, but how to get into the journalism. Lang emphasized how getting out and joining your school’s paper or interning at a local paper with give you the tools and experience that will help guide you.
Although the entertainment reporting does take a lot of criticism as low-level literature and reporting, Lang’s discussion with Wang and us revealed that this was entirely false. The very principles of journalism are not confined into one specific beat or area and an article’s quality is not defined by its subject. Calling himself a “pop culture junkie”, Lang revealed that his success and passion for journalism lied in doing what he enjoys. It just so happens that what he enjoys doing have some of the best perks. Next time he’s “working”, he’ll be next sitting in the same room as Tina Fey and Jane Lynch at the 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards.

Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
