The same CNN reporter who broke news on the Virgina Tech shootings and followed the aftermath in Bali after terrorist bombings once worked for Mrs. Fields cookies. He also worked for QED, an environmental agency with a hippie at the helm. All of these experiences shaped the way Richard Lui views media as well as making him a rising journalist for the media giant that is CNN.
Lui’s put all his knowledge to use at CNN, covering a wide array of topics ranging from terrorism in Mumbai to grill safety. Luckily for viewers, Lui’s passion for journalism burns and he enjoys the challenge of approaching such dissimilar topics.
“I want to be the kind of person that can handle that breadth [of topics],” says Lui, mentioning that it prevents him from getting bored at his job.
Lui’s always had to adapt. His circuitous route to journalism took him through such college majors as radio and news before graduating with a degree in rhetoric.
“I draw from life experience, having gone through a lot of wacky things,” explains Lui.
For journalists and others in general, Lui recommends learning to be a generalist before becoming a specialist. This is invaluable advice coming from a man who speaks as easily about saving money at gas stations as he does about American Idol.
Lui sees events firsthand that many people have never even heard about, citing his piece on sex slavery in Indonesia as his favorite. He knows journalists can’t change the world on their own, but they can tell stories that raise awareness so that people can make a difference.
Lui’s first work with CNN wasn’t in the field, but rather with CNN’s online Pipeline team when he joined in 2005. Having anchored, reported, produced and seemingly ran his own show in Channel News Asia beforehand, it was an easy transition for Lui. His new position at CNN allowed him to focus on one job at a time.
Now with the Headline News team, his former work with Pipeline puts him in a perfect position to opine on the continually changing online media today, beginning with his own network. He mentioned CNN’s former policy of charging for online content.
“That’s so 2000,” said Lui. “Who’s going to pay for [online content] nowadays?”
Lui also warned that news networks need to watch out for overshooting their goals. Lui talked about how CNN made their content a little too edgy in trying to appeal to a younger audience. Surprisingly, it’s not just Generation Z’ers who are watching CNN’s online content, but adults 40-50 years old who form a large online audience creating a fan base with a huge age range from as young as 15 to as old as 50 years old.
“I think the problem is we’re trying to be too cool,” says Lui.
Such obstacles are part of the industry and Lui understands and appreciates that CNN is willing to make these mistakes in return for a better product. In his mind, it’s better to overshoot and pull back than to not go far enough and end up moving too slowly, losing a large part of the audience all together.
The transition into the Internet age is especially difficult, even for large media companies that have delivered the news for decades.
“It is like taking a battleship and turning it,” says Lui.
Though it may seem slow and frustrating at the time, as Lui knows from personal experience, the end result is worth it.
