One by one the photos flashed across the screen: Muhammad Ali towering over a defeated Sonny Liston, a swimmer’s face planted against a diving board, a young girl playing basketball inside a Chinese cave.
These images deliver what James Colton calls the “oooh” factor. He’s the photography editor at Sports Illustrated magazine, and it’s his job to draw readers into his magazine with the most spectacular sports photos of the week.
“Whether it’s a news photo or a sports photo, it has to affect you, move you in some way. It needs the “oooh” factor, something that reaches into your throat and tugs at your heart. For a photo to be effective, it must be affective.”
Here at his fifth consecutive J Camp, Colton has a wealth of knowledge in the industry, having started his career more than 35 years ago. He has effortlessly made the transition from news to sports photography, maintaining that “quality comes first, content comes second.”
In a fascinating exchange, Colton asked the students to share something they recall about historical events in the world that happened prior to their birth. As soon as these dates was uttered, whether it was Pearl Harbor or the Vietnam War, every hand shot up, all with an iconic photograph from this event etched in their mind. Colton had a back story for each picture, giving students an inside look at the sometimes unfair world of photography.
The memorable photograph from the Oklahoma City bombing in 1994, a firefighter holding a bloodied child, was captured by two different people. One of them however lost the rights to their photograph. Because he was working at the time he took the photograph, the photo became property of his company. This unfortunate tale was one of many stories Colton told that added another dimension to our experience.
Growing up in a photography filled household, his mother being the arts editor of People magazine and his father having created television technology that is still used today, Colton was exposed to this field at an early age. He admitted that shooting photography isn’t his strength, but Colton does have a keen eye for the art. He began his career in 1972 as the Associated Press’s color picture editor. From there he climbed the ranks of photography editing, stopping at Newsweek and Sipa Press, before returning to Newsweek in 1992 as the director of photography. From there he finally settled into his current job at Sports Illustrated, one that he calls “the greatest job in the world.”
“Where else do you get to have the best photos in the world put on your desk every day?,” Colton added.
Colton chooses the pictures for the “Leading Off” section of Sports Illustrated, the three centerfolds at the front of the publication. He makes these selections in an attempt to “introduce sports to the public that wouldn’t normally be seen in our magazine.” He candidly admitted that basketball delivers repetitive pictures, while the Olympics are the most exciting time for sports photography.
Colton’s illustrious career has garnered him various awards such as the “Golden Career Award” given by the Palm Beach Photographic Centre in 2004 and he has been acknowledged as one of the “100 most important people in photography” by American photo magazine. To have a man with his knowledge and experience in the field of photography talk to our students was a once in a lifetime experience.
“You are our future,” Colton said. “Any time you get a group of young people pursuing something, I’m all for it. You’ve got to give back. If I helped just one person here today, it will have been worth it.”

There’s noticeably a bundle to find out about this. I assume you made certain nice points in options also.

I would like to see a ‘members only’ section here. Even if there was a small fee in order to view certain content, it might help to cut down on the less useful topics for those of us who only want to see the premium stuff. It’s actually pretty easy to set up a membership section on your blog, especially if you have the right tool. I think that one of the best solutions is to use the Wishlist Members tool that can turn any WordPress blog into a membership site. It comes with a lot of bells and whistles but it is really easy to implement. Just unzip and upload the plugin, and within minutes you’ll have your own membership site up and running… with a tool that allows you to have members only content. It has an integrated payment solution for prospective members and a great member management tool. Create “Silver”, “Gold”, “Platinum”, or any other “levels” you want! Charge more for higher levels of access – all within the same blog. Easily upgrade members, move them to different levels, pause their membership, or delete them entirely. Just click the “Hide” button to protect exclusive content for members of a particular level. Create “modular” memberships and hide content from other levels. You will be able to easily get paid by your members with the integrated PayPal solution (others available as well). Check it Out -> http://cash411.info/go/224/
Precisely info i had been seeking. Effectively put also.

I see some wasted space here. Well, not really ‘wasted’ exactly, but I think it could be better monetized. This site could probably benefit by having its own advertizing setup. This is the correct weblog for anyone who wants to search out out about this topic. You notice so much its almost laborious to argue with you (not that I really would need…HaHa). You definitely put a brand new spin on a subject thats been written about for years. Nice stuff, just nice!
With the great content on this blog, it is surprising that there is not a members section that I can find. Did I miss it? Setting up a membership blog or members section on a blog is not all that difficult, you just need to get the right tool for the job. One of the best ways to get a membership section setup is to just use the Wishlist Member tool (Google it). It is simple yet powerful. I dugg some of you post as I thought they were invaluable very helpful
Spot on with this write-up, I truly assume this website wants much more consideration. I’ll probably be once more to learn rather more, thanks for that info.
Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
There are some fascinating time limits on this article but I don’t know if I see all of them middle to heart. There’s some validity but I’ll take hold opinion until I look into it further. Good article , thanks and we would like extra! Added to FeedBurner as effectively
I am completely lost by using it all! info more than load! hehe
How would you like to be able to display affiliate products from MULTIPLE Affiliate Networks (Amazon, Linkshare, Commission Junction and Affiliate Window with Avantllink coming shortly) in a price comparison format? It is a script that sets up in minutes and runs just like any other plugin. As you probably know, it only takes about a half of a minute to upload, install and activate a WordPress plugin. If you are like me, you will be quite impressed when you first put this thing in motion. This tool boasts many advanced options which enable you to have full control over the look and feel of your price comparison units as well as the products you wish to display. Change the size, colors, buttons and width of your price comparison units. There are little thumbnail images of the merchant on each of the products. You can choose to not include this is you prefer. Automatically refresh product prices on a daily basis. You get to decide if you want to include merchant logos, product pictures, and other options. Choose Amazon or Linkshare categories, limit products by price and much more. You have complete control over which products actually show up on your page. Once you save the settings that you have selected, the product unit will automatically show on your page. This script comes with complete, detailed instructions for every step of the process. Once you get this software, you can use it on all of your websites. Check it Out -> http://cash411.info/go/222/
