Our denouement is within reach: the last News Quiz question has been answered, the last speakers have been questioned, the last hot, humid, sticky, fifteen-minute promenade to the University of Miami Communications Center has been taken.

If anything, the journey of 40-something eclectic students was the opposite of a Pyrrhic victory. We not only enhanced our journalistic skills and knowledge, but also made friends from across the nation: Honolulu, New York City, Champaign, Tampa, Denver, and of course Memphis, Tennessee. We expanded contacts, met eminent individuals, and learned invaluable life lessons—when in Miami, always carry a bottle of water, and Clea has Band-Aids. Two Four or five birds with one stone, wow.

J Camp wasn’t what I expected. It was better. I had a view of mundane workshops teaching a youthful group of individuals, the majority of whom would be unsocial or shy, the basic mechanics of writing in the journalistic style. Conversely, each speaker gave riveting stories, provoked the audience, and invigorated our minds about each of our futures in journalism stands. Additionally, I think the coordinators of the camp synthesized a remarkable sect of individuals who each brought something different to the table. And I think we will all remain in contact through the years. Thank you, Facebook.

Sometimes the lessons I learned were contradictory, leaving me more bewildered than ever. Seriously, is online media up and coming? Yet, one piece of advice all speakers shared was that the path to journalism will be circuitous. For someone like me who is almost obsessive-compulsive about being organized (ask my roommate) and following a linear course, it is almost frightening to pursue such a haphazard career that is in the midst of transition.

However, one of the clearest speakers, Richard Lui of CNN Pipeline, set things straight. The three questions—Are news networks ignoring me? Will there be jobs for me when I graduate? What should I major in?—he asked almost modeled my concerns. While I’m still avid about a career in medicine, Lui assured my peers and me that this is utterly fine. It seems as though all branches can lead to the field of journalism, as evidenced by the careers of Teri Agins and Lui himself. This will probably be the most valuable souvenir that I will take with me on my two-hour plane ride.

I guess as being the first to arrive in Miami, it’s appropriate that I will be the first to leave. I don’t know, though, if I’m ready to say goodbye to the friends, staff, city, campus, and extraordinary experience in general.

When I step return back home to Columbia, Maryland, I know I’ll have a better outlook of where journalism stands in my life. I couldn’t quite envision it being a part of my prospect five days ago. A few speakers and conversations later, I now know it will be a ingredient of my future; whether it is the main portion or a small fragment is still up in the air. But it’s in the future, so congratulations AAJA J Camp 2007, Miami, Florida. –Ayeeshik Kole, J Camp Live! Staff Writer
